New IRS deadline has come & gone, but you can make the most of all that data

On May 17, the IRS began revoking tax-exempt status from nonprofits that failed to file three consecutive annual returns (Form 990-N, 990-EZ, 990, or 990-PF). The Kansas City Star wrote in Tuesdays’ Business section that many small nonprofits were scurrying on Monday to meet the deadline, but encountered a backup on the IRS electronic submission system due to heavy use.

For more information about the new IRS rules, GuideStar offers an overview and reminds nonprofits to update their GuideStar profiles. For those nonprofits that have not created a profile at GuideStar – why not give it a try? GuideStar is one of the first places many potential donors look to learn more about a nonprofit organization.

GuideStar describes its nonprofit reports as including information from the IRS Business Master File; IRS Forms 990, 990-EZ, and 990-PF, as well as from the nonprofit itself. Any nonprofit can update their GuideStar report for free to ensure site visitors get the most complete data about their organization.

You’ve gone to all that work to fill out your IRS forms; now put it to work for your organization!  Learn more about GuideStar profiles.
