Junior Achievement Addressing Youth Unemployment

In January, I began work on a Resource Development Plan for Junior Achievement of Western PA.  We all know the vital role the organization plays in teaching young people how to become entrepreneurs. Many years ago I participated in the program as a high school student. Since this time, the organization has evolved greatly and has taken on a much broader role, starting the financial literacy process as early as Kindergarten. As a result, they have positioned themselves well to address one of society’s greatest challenges.

With the reduction in manufacturing jobs across the country and many young people becoming disenchanted with school and even dropping out of high school, JA’s role becomes more vital in helping to steer young people to become more financially literate, better ready to enter the workforce and/or start their own businesses.

An article I read earlier this week in the February 2 edition of the Bloomsburg Businessweek Magazine, titled, “The Youth Unemployment Bomb” drives home the urgency of addressing this youth employment issue at home and around the world. I am excited to have the opportunity to help JA secure the resources to accomplish their mission.

How Do You Treat Your Donor Prospects?

There are a variety of articles and resources relating to fundraising on Guidestar’s website. I try to read as many of them as I can.  Recently, I read an article titled, “It’s A Donor’s Ballgame”.  I thought it gave an interesting perspective, via a couple of stories, how we relate to donors. It profiles several situations involving large donors and how we may treat them.

Answering Difficult Questions During the Fundraising Process

I was reading an article on a newsletter from the Suddes Group about responding to difficult questions in a succint manner.  Many times during capital campaigns and other fundraising projects we are confronted by individuals asking us for quick answers. I thought this was interesting reading and I thought I would pass along the link. The article is called, “Confidently Answering Any Curveball Questions”.

Erie DAWN gets check from former homeless woman

In my job as a fundraising consultant for Jeffrey Byrne & Associates, Inc., I have the opportunity to meet a lot of great people. We work with a wide variety of nonprofit organizations.  As part of our capacity-building work, we help organizations create and/or strengthen their case for support. Last September, while working with Erie DAWN, a nonprofit in Erie, PA that addresses homelessness for women, I had the opportunity to meet a remarkable woman. In my opinion, she is one of the best nonprofit testimonials ever.  Her story is inspiring to all who witnessed her presentation.  Newspaper article.
