Research Results of Online Donor Behavior

Last week I participated in a webinar by FirstGiving, an online fundraising firm. It was well done and very imformative. I learned a great deal that I did not know about online giving.  The results of their research conducted over the last three years, surprised me. We all know that online donations is the fastest growing category of philanthropic giving.  The company’s newsletter First Giving Insights features a great article: Understanding Donor Behavior: Seven Key Takeaways from Landmark FirstGiving studyI encourage you to read the article.  I think you will find it informative as I did.

Is Your Organization Ready for Planned Giving?

Earlier today as part of my professioinal development reading, I came across an article on Guidestar.com about legacy giving.  It is an excellent article and even features a Legacy Giving Readiness Checklist. The article: Don’t Miss the Opportunity to Strengthen Your Organization through Legacy Giving
As I work with nonprofit organizations, there is increasing interest in addressing the planned giving arena. I found this to be a good article that outlines the process.  Is your organization ready? Can planned giving help you deliver on your mission? Is your board ready to endorse legacy giving?  What opportunities are there to promote a planned giving program? Do you have the time to focus on planned giving? This article will help you answer many of these questions.

Something Nonprofit Organizations Need to Know

The Chronicle on Philanthropy yesterday, featured an article titled,  Budget Plan Brings Big Changes to Tax Incentives for Donors.  President Obama is proposing to sharply limit the value of charitable tax breaks for wealthier individuals for the fiscal year 2012.   ”For too long we have tolerated a tax system that’s a complex, inefficient, and loophole-riddled mess,” President Obama wrote.  I believe it is important for all nonprofit leaders to read this document, as legislation could significantly impact any major gift effort.

Junior Achievement Addressing Youth Unemployment

In January, I began work on a Resource Development Plan for Junior Achievement of Western PA.  We all know the vital role the organization plays in teaching young people how to become entrepreneurs. Many years ago I participated in the program as a high school student. Since this time, the organization has evolved greatly and has taken on a much broader role, starting the financial literacy process as early as Kindergarten. As a result, they have positioned themselves well to address one of society’s greatest challenges.

With the reduction in manufacturing jobs across the country and many young people becoming disenchanted with school and even dropping out of high school, JA’s role becomes more vital in helping to steer young people to become more financially literate, better ready to enter the workforce and/or start their own businesses.

An article I read earlier this week in the February 2 edition of the Bloomsburg Businessweek Magazine, titled, “The Youth Unemployment Bomb” drives home the urgency of addressing this youth employment issue at home and around the world. I am excited to have the opportunity to help JA secure the resources to accomplish their mission.

How Do You Treat Your Donor Prospects?

There are a variety of articles and resources relating to fundraising on Guidestar’s website. I try to read as many of them as I can.  Recently, I read an article titled, “It’s A Donor’s Ballgame”.  I thought it gave an interesting perspective, via a couple of stories, how we relate to donors. It profiles several situations involving large donors and how we may treat them.
